MAYAN CITIES |
One of the centers of Mayan civilization along the Usumacinta river, Yaxchilan is a series of plazas and terraces situated on the hillsides above a horseshoe bend in the river. The city was settled as early as 200 A.D., and was dominated by the dynasties of the jaguar cult in the 5th to 8th centuries. Like most Classic Mayan sites, it was abandoned by shortly after 900 A.D.
