Palenque, View of Pacal's palace and pyramid tomb
One of the greatest centers of high classic Mayan architecture, Palenque lies at the north-western edge of the Mayan area, and is unusual and unique in style and structure. The city was settled as early as 200 A.D., but enjoyed it's greatest cultural efflorescence under the reign of Pacal and his descendants from the 5th to the 7th centuries.
